Scale-making Tips

The most comprehensive selection of scale tips for fish and reptile carvers in the world! We are sure to have the right scale maker for you. Different artists have different needs and different ways of forming scales. Because of this, we have a broad selection of scale tips in 7 different series. One is sure to be just right for you. All scale tips are available as interchangeable tips to fit either our new #BPH Binding-post handpiece or our original #ITH Interchangeable-tip handpiece (except the #23S), or they can be purchased as fixed-tip pens. Many of our scale tips use laser-welding technology, resulting in a more uniform, durable tip than ever before possible.

Tip Styles

#20 Full Scale
picture of tip #20

With each depression, the #20 tip forms a full raised scale. It actually pushes down the wood behind the scale, leaving a clean, raised scale of uniform size. Available widths from: 1mm to 8mm. in Regular, Flat, or Deep curves.

#20 tips in sizes up to and including 6mm Regular curve, 8mm Flat curve, and 5mm Deep curve have a steel blade welded onto the tip as shown above. Larger tips are formed completely from tip wire and are not as strong as the smaller steel-blade tips. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

#21 HalfScale
picture of tip #21

With each depression, the #21 tip forms two halves of a raised scale. This design allows for a slight variation in scale size. Available widths from: 2mm to 10mm. in Regular, Flat, or Deep curves.

#21 tips in sizes up to and including 8mm Regular curve, 8mm Flat curve, and 6mm Deep curve have a steel blade welded onto the tip. Larger tips are formed completely from tip wire as shown above. They are not as strong as the smaller steel-blade tips. All scales formed in the above illustration were made with a 9mm Regular curve tip. Scale sizes and curves were deliberately varied to illustrate the range of shapes possible from a single tip. Uniform scales are easily achieved, too. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

#22 Realistic Full Scale
picture of tip #22

Forms the most accurate scales possible, mimmicking the real thing beautifully. Requires a bit more concentration to use; recommended for advanced users. Available widths from: 0.5mm to 10mm, Regular, Flat, or Deep curve. Custom species-specific scales available - contact us for details.

#22 tips all have a steel blade welded onto the tip. Larger sizes will require a higher heat setting and a longer heat-up and cool-down time. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

#23S Clark Schreibeis Scaler
picture of tip #23S

Designed by world-champion fish carver Clark Schreibeis and built exclusively by Razertip! Clark's tip is more of a "freehand" scale maker, allowing you to form raised scales of any size or shape. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of this tip, but it is definitely the most versatile scaler you can get.

#TH23S tip fits BPH the pen. (will not fit the older #ITH pen).

#25 Lateral Line
picture of tip #25

Used much like the #21, the #25 has a specially formed "tunnel" that leaves a raised rib in the center. When scales are burned in rows, a raised lateral line is left. Available widths from: 2mm to 10mm. in Regular, Flat, or Deep curve.

#25 tips in sizes up to and including 8mm Regular curve, 8mm Flat curve, and 6mm Deep curve have a steel blade welded onto the tip. Larger tips are formed completely from tip wire as shown above and are not as strong as the smaller steel-blade tips. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

#26 Sharp Smile

With each depression, the #26 tip forms a sharp "smile". The fine line left in the surface makes a quick, simple, effective, uniform scale outlines. Available widths from: 2mm to 14mm. in Regular, Flat, or Deep curves.

#26 tips are all formed from tip wire as shown above (left). They can be used to indicate scales as shown above (right); leaving a bit of space between each scale when making the first row gives a more realistic scale pattern as shown on the lower half of the illustration above. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

#29 Blunt Smile
picture of tip #29

With each depression, the #29 tip forms a blunt "smile". Versatile, allowing for slight variations in scale size. Available widths from: 2mm to 14mm. in Regular, Flat, or Deep curves.

#29 tips are all formed from tip wire as shown above (left). They leave a heavier groove than the #26 tips, but they have the ability to vary the depth, curve and width of the scale shape. The top two rows (above right) show uniform scale shape/size while the rows below show how variable the shape/size can be if desired. HD cord is recommended for all scale tips.

Dura-GRIT Abrasive Cutters
Dura-GRIT Abrasive Cutters

Tough tungsten-carbide cutters for tough jobs. Very agressive yet leave quite a smooth finish. We rate them between a Ruby Carver and a Typhoon bur. They're very controllable and they last and last. Grit will not tear loose and the edges stay sharp. All have 1/8" shanks.
